Sardinia is a land of deep contrast and emotions: mediterranean flavours in the
deep silence, shrill sounds and bright images. Sulcis Iglesiente is its oldest
part, an appealing mixture of wilderness and romanticism.
Here are just a few of the nicest places you would enjoy to visit with us:
|

|
Iglesias
The most important city in the mining area. Monteponi mine, Santa Barbara caves
and Porto Flavia site are really worth a visit, along with the fascinating
medieval remnants in the city centre and the cosy mining villages in the surroundings.
|
Buggerru
An attractive village by the sea, with its 19th c. mining sites like Malfidano and
the gorgeous Galleria Henry on a high cliff. Really striking are the stone sculptures
by the famous Sardinian artist Pinuccio Sciola, an impressive artwork memorial to
honour the miners killed in the 1904 strike.
|

|

|
Calasetta
A very nice village on the sea with the embarking point for the
ferrries to and from Carloforte.
Lovely sandy beaches and very comfortable accommodation in and around the centre.
|
Carbonia
Once the most important centre of the coal mining district, today Carbonia is a
lively town with many facilities. You can visit the archeologic musem, Villa
Sulcis, or move off the town to admire the gorgeous panorama from the remnants
of the Punic- Roman Sirai village.
|

|

|
Carloforte
This nice fishing village was founded three hundred years ago by people coming
from Genoa area. It still proudly preserves the ancient dialect and the original
traditions. This island is also a protected sanctuary for the Maltese falcon
(Falco Eleonorae) on the high trachyte cliffs of Cala Fico.
|
Domusnovas
This small village is surely a good starting point for walking itineraries on
the wild mountains of Marganai / Oridda. Nearby are the San Giovanni caves,
worth visiting by enthusiasts. On the mountains of Oridda, several ancient
mining sites can be visited.

|

|
Fluminimaggiore
A typical Sardinian village based on farming, with a good tradition in craftsmanship,
particularly for knives. The area is rich in springs and splendid woods. This charming
landscape encloses two jewels: the majestic remnants of a Punic / Roman temple in
Antas and the karst caves of Su Mannau.
|
Gonnesa
This mining village is rich with remnants of its long history. Recently it has improved
its touristic facilities around the wonderful Funtanamare and Plag'e mesu beaches;
in particular, some very good farmhouses and bed & breakfast rooms are easily available.
|

|

|
Portoscuso
The industrial area lies within an intact wild landscape with an impressive
coastline; the small village is made mostly of tiny white homes all around a 17th
c. tunny fishing building and a small touristic harbour.
Ferries regularly connect Portoscuso to Carloforte.
|
Sant'Antioco
Some remnants of the ancient Punic town are worth visiting: the tophet, the necropolis
along with the related museums. On the uneven coastline you can find high cliffs and
fantastic white sandy beaches on crystal clear waters.
|

|

|
Villacidro
It is a very important farming centre under the Linas range. Its territory is rich
in waters, particularly in spring, with streams flowing in the woods and forming
the most beautiful falls in Sardinia. Villacidro is a perfect starting point for
trekking on the mountains.
|
Villamassargia
This village is important for its tradition in using the ancient Sardinian loom.
Some churches dating to the middle ages still preserve the original facades. You can
also visit the recently restored mining village of Orbai and the fabulous olive
trees of S'Ortu Mannu: some of them are more than 1000 years old!
